Event details

Volcanic earthquakes and tremors continue to shake Taal Volcano in Batangas province, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported on Sunday morning. In its latest bulletin, Phivolcs said Taal registered 56 volcanic earthquakes and 26 volcanic tremor episodes over the past 48 hours. From November 1 to 30, the volcano logged 514 volcanic earthquakes and 98 tremors — exceeding October’s 367 quakes and 69 tremors, and significantly higher than September’s 189 quakes and 129 tremors. Phivolcs explained that volcanic earthquakes are triggered by magmatic or magma-related activity beneath or near an active volcano.Tremors, on the other hand, are low-frequency seismic vibrations (0.5–5 Hz) linked to resonating magma within cracks and vents, clusters of low-frequency quakes, or small internal explosions. The agency also reported that over the last 24 hours until 12 a.m. on Sunday, the volcano emitted 208 metric tons of sulfur dioxide and produced plumes rising to 800 meters, which it classified as “moderate emissions” drifting southwest.
