Event details

Severe flooding following more than 600 mm of rainfall over three days and water levels reaching up to 2.5 meters has prompted the governor of Songkhla province to order all residents in the Hat Yai district to evacuate immediately. Hat Yai Airport remains operational, though surrounding routes are affected, and officials are coordinating with tourist police and agencies to provide evacuation assistance, food, and water. Evacuation centers are open at the International Convention Center of Prince of Songkla University, the Songkhla Rajabhat University auditorium, and the Royal Thai Navy’s Naval Area Command 2. Search and rescue teams are currently focusing on vulnerable groups.

Situation update

Eighteen people had been killed by the severe flooding in the South as of Wednesday morning, with water levels continuing to rise in most of the inundated provinces. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that the floods had taken six lives in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, five in Songkhla, three in Pattani, and two each in Yala and Phatthalung. The disastrous flooding, fuelled by torrential rain, persisted in nine of the 14 southern provinces - Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Phatthalung, Satun, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. More than 2.78 million people's lives have been severely disrupted, with hundreds of thousands of homes flooded. The only bright note - the Meteorological Department expected the rain to slowly ease off from Wednesday into Monday next week.
