A firefighter was injured while battling a fire at a chemical plant Wednesday night, fire officials said. Crews were dispatched at about 8:15 p.m. to a report of an explosion at StanChem Resins in the East Berlin section of town. Crews attacked the flames from outside the two-story brick building and were able to knock them down with help from its sprinklers, they said. There were some tense moments when firefighters searched for a worker who was believed to be in the building at the time, but the employee was later found safe at home, fire officials said in a Facebook post. A firefighter was injured while working to put out the blaze, but the injury was minor, officials said. The fire is out and there is no risk to the public, fire officials said in the pre-dawn post. Representatives of the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were on scene early Thursday to investigate any remaining hazards and to confirm that all smoldering spots had been extinguished, they said. DEEP also worked with the company to mitigate the flow of contaminated runoff. StanChem is a supplier of resins for industrial coatings, adhesives, and sealants, according to its website. “The extent of impact from runoff is expected to be minimal,” the officials said. Inspectors with the Berlin Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the cause.
