New bird flu outbreaks in Békés and Hajdú-Bihar counties – Nébih warns of strict disease control discipline. In the second half of April, the laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) confirmed two new cases of bird flu: the H5N1 subtype virus was detected in dead poultry in Békés and Hajdú-Bihar counties. Nébih emphasizes once again: due to the continuous presence of the virus, even the smallest disease control deficiency can have serious consequences, and consistent compliance with biosecurity measures is the responsibility of every animal keeper. The increased mortality in the large fattening turkey farm in the Szarvas settlement drew attention to the infection. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the H5N1 subtype. The eradication of the infected population began immediately, and the authority ordered the designation of a three-kilometer protection zone and an extended surveillance zone. The virus was identified in a small flock of 700 geese in the settlement of Komádi. The suspected infection, based on the deaths, was confirmed here as well by the Nébih laboratory. Epidemiological measures came into effect here as well immediately: in addition to the elimination of the entire flock, a three-kilometer protection zone and a ten-kilometer observation zone were ordered. Epidemiological investigations are underway at both locations, aimed at uncovering the possible source and spread routes of the virus. The authority reminds that avian influenza can also return to unaffected regions, therefore, poultry farmers must not relax epidemiological discipline under any circumstances.

Symptoms: | H5N1 is a type of influenza virus that causes a highly infectious, severe respiratory disease in birds called avian influenza (or "bird flu"). Human cases of H5N1 avian influenza occur occasionally, but it is difficult to transmit the infection from person to person. When people do become infected, the mortality rate is about 60%. Almost all cases of H5N1 infection in people have been associated with close contact with infected live or dead birds, or H5N1-contaminated environments. The virus does not infect humans easily, and spread from person to person appears to be unusual. There is no evidence that the disease can be spread to people through properly prepared and thoroughly cooked food. In most cases, avian influenza in humans develops into a serious disease that should be treated promptly in the hospital and may require intensive care, where available. The antiviral medicine oseltamivir can reduce the severity of illness and prevent death, and should be used in all cases. |
