Following a fatal case in Epuyén, health authorities intensified epidemiological monitoring and emphasized the importance of early vaccination. The Andean region is strengthening epidemiological surveillance after a fatal case of hantavirus was confirmed in Epuyén. Emiliano Biondo, head of the Health Programs Department at Esquel Hospital, reported that several families are in isolation and under strict observation. The deceased patient was from El Bolsón, in Río Negro, and possible sources of infection in natural areas are being investigated. In parallel, an environmental survey and rodent traps are being placed. The vaccination campaign against respiratory diseases such as influenza and pneumonia continues. Priority is given to at-risk groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, healthcare workers, and young children. Finally, Biondo emphasized that vaccines arrive in stages and stressed the importance of timely doses: “Peaks in respiratory diseases occur between June and July. Preventing the virus early is key,” he indicated.

Symptoms: | Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a group of clinically similar illnesses caused by species of hantaviruses from the family Bunyaviridae. It is also known as Korean hemorrhagic fever, epidemic hemorrhagic fever, and nephropathis epidemica. The species that cause HFRS include Hantaan River, Dobrava-Belgrade, Saaremaa, Seoul, and Puumala. It is found in Europe, Asia, and Africa. In hantavirus induced hemorrhagic fever, incubation time is between two to four weeks in humans before symptoms of infection present. Severity of symptoms depends on the viral load.[ |
