The Food Safety Department has shut down Hotel Bilal Biryani in Triplicane, which allegedly served spoiled food to six customers. They have been admitted to the Communicable Diseases Hospital (CDH) in Tondiarpet. The move comes in the wake of protests by some customers and complaints filed by two of the affected persons at the Triplicane police station. A team of officials led by designated officer P. Satheesh Kumar, along with health officials of the Chennai Corporation, inspected the food being served at the restaurant on Wednesday (April 2, 2025). A senior official of the city police said that the restaurant had remained closed from Monday (March 31, 2025), and when the Food Safety officials tried to contact its management, the latter did not respond. As a result, the officials sealed the restaurant and issued a notice to the management, seeking an explanation. As many as six people are undergoing treatment at the CDH, Tondiarpet, after suffering from food poisoning allegedly after consuming food from Hotel Bilal Biryani. A senior official of the City Police said a group of six persons - V. Vignesh, M. Jaishankar, K. Shyam, K. Vivekanandan, A. Stephen, and S. Rebecca — had gone to Hotel Bilal Biryani on Sunday (March 30, 2025) night for dinner. On Monday (March 31, 2025) morning, all six of them experienced vomiting and severe stomach ache, and were treated as outpatients at a private hospital nearby for food poisoning. Later, as the symptoms did not abate, they were rushed to the CDH in Tondiarpet. Based on a complaint filed by the parents of Mr. Vignesh, the Triplicane police have filed a case against the restaurant.

Symptoms: | Foodborne illness usually arises from improper handling, preparation, or food storage. Good hygiene practices before, during, and after food preparation can reduce the chances of contracting an illness. There is a consensus in the public health community that regular hand-washing is one of the most effective defenses against the spread of foodborne illness. The action of monitoring food to ensure that it will not cause foodborne illness is known as food safety. Foodborne disease can also be caused by a large variety of toxins that affect the environment. For foodborne illness caused by chemicals, see Food contaminants. Foodborne illness can also be caused by pesticides or medicines in food and naturally toxic substances such as poisonous mushrooms or reef fish. |
