A South Korean healthcare worker, evacuated from Ebola-hit Sierra Leone for fear of a possible contraction of the epidemic, was in stable condition at a hospital in Berlin, German medical officials said Saturday. The worker, whose identity was withheld, was airlifted to Berlin earlier in the day and admitted to a hospital for tests and observation. The tests included a laboratory analysis of a blood sample. The results of the blood test were expected on Sunday (Korean time), German medical officials said. The evacuation by Phoenix Air, a U.S. air ambulance company, came after the worker was determined to be at risk of exposure to the virus while collecting blood from an Ebola patient, according to South Korean officials. The health care worker's left index finger "touched" a needle through a partly ripped glove. The worker did not sustain any external injuries and has not shown symptoms of infection, such as fever or vomiting, they said. The health care worker is one of the 10-strong medical team members sent by South Korea to an Ebola clinic built by Britain in Goderich, near Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown. South Korea has reached preliminary deals with Europe and the United States to evacuate its health care workers from West Africa to Europe for treatment if they contract the virus. Despite the evacuation, South Korea plans to send 20 other medical workers inthe coming months to the West African country. South Korea has joined global efforts to fight Ebola by sending medical workers and offering a combined US$12.6 million in assistance. The virus is estimated to have killed more than 7,900 people since December 2013, according to the World Health Organization.

Symptoms: | Manifestation of Ebola begins abruptly with a sudden onset of an influenza-like stage characterized by general malaise, fever with chills, sore throat, severe headache, weakness, joint pain, muscle pain, and chest pain. Respiratory tract involvement is characterized by pharyngitis with sore throat, cough, dyspnea, and hiccups. The central nervous system is affected as judged by the development of severe headaches, agitation, confusion, fatigue, depression, seizures, and sometimes coma. Cutaneous presentation may include: maculopapular rash, petechiae, purpura, ecchymoses, and hematomas (especially around needle injection sites). In general, development of hemorrhagic symptoms is indicative of a negative prognosis. However, contrary to popular belief, hemorrhage does not lead to hypovolemia and is not the cause of death (total blood loss is low except during labor). Instead, death occurs due to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) due to fluid redistribution, hypotension, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and focal tissue necroses. The average time between contracting the infection and the onset of symptoms is 13 days, but can be as long as 25 days. |
