At least two people have been killed and seven others infected with the Sudan strain of the highly contagious Ebola virus in the Ugandan capital, Kampala. The authorities have also put more than 40 people who came in contact with the victims—a male nurse and his wife—in quarantine, and a hundred others are now being traced. Read on to know more. At least seven people have tested positive and two have died from a highly contagious Ebola virus strain in Uganda as scientists race to develop a lifesaving vaccine. According to authorities, this is a sharp rise from the two cases reported just a few days ago in the capital, Kampala. In neighboring Tanzania, nine people lost their lives last month after being diagnosed with Marburg—an infectious cousin of Ebola. Doctors say the patient in Uganda—a male nurse—had sought treatment at various healthcare facilities after developing fever-like symptoms. He visited a government hospital in Mbale, around 150 miles east of Kampala, near the border with Kenya. The 32-year-old died ten days later from the Sudan strain of Ebola, with his wife becoming the outbreak’s second victim. The authorities have at least put more than 40 people who came into contact with the couple in quarantine, and a hundred others are now being traced. It is the first time that Uganda has reported a confirmed outbreak of Ebola since 2022, when at least 164 people were infected, leading to 55 deaths.
Uganda has recorded six new Ebola cases, bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed infections to nine, including one death, the Ministry of Health said on Monday. Seven patients are currently receiving treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, while one patient is being treated at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital in the eastern part of the country, said Charles Olaro, director general of health services at the Ministry of Health, in a statement. "In response to the outbreak, the Ministry of Health has placed 265 contacts under quarantine and implemented strict follow-up measures," Olaro said. Uganda declared an Ebola outbreak on Jan. 30 after a 32-year-old nurse died of the disease. "To contain the spread of the virus, the ministry has intensified surveillance efforts, enhanced public health risk communication, and strengthened community engagement," Olaro added. The Ministry of Health has urged the public to remain calm as it ramps up preventive measures and reaffirms its commitment to protecting the population from Ebola. "The Ministry of Health reassures the public that the situation is under control and that the country remains safe, with no travel restrictions in place," Olaro said. "We urge the public to remain vigilant and report anyone exhibiting Ebola symptoms to the nearest health facility or contact the Ministry of Health," he added.

Symptoms: | Manifestation of Ebola begins abruptly with a sudden onset of an influenza-like stage characterized by general malaise, fever with chills, sore throat, severe headache, weakness, joint pain, muscle pain, and chest pain. Respiratory tract involvement is characterized by pharyngitis with sore throat, cough, dyspnea, and hiccups. The central nervous system is affected as judged by the development of severe headaches, agitation, confusion, fatigue, depression, seizures, and sometimes coma. Cutaneous presentation may include: maculopapular rash, petechiae, purpura, ecchymoses, and hematomas (especially around needle injection sites). In general, development of hemorrhagic symptoms is indicative of a negative prognosis. However, contrary to popular belief, hemorrhage does not lead to hypovolemia and is not the cause of death (total blood loss is low except during labor). Instead, death occurs due to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) due to fluid redistribution, hypotension, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and focal tissue necroses. The average time between contracting the infection and the onset of symptoms is 13 days, but can be as long as 25 days. |
